Troubleshooting
Metadata still appears after downloading
Solution
Verify the file is a JPEG. Open it with a metadata viewer like ExifTool or your OS file properties panel. Some metadata viewers cache old data — reopen the downloaded file fresh.
File size is unchanged after stripping EXIF
Solution
Some JPEGs contain very little metadata — the size difference may be only a few kilobytes and not visibly noticeable. Check the before/after metadata count to confirm removal.
GPS is not listed in the metadata count
Solution
Some cameras store GPS in non-standard EXIF tags. The tool removes all APP1 and APP13 segments so all standard and most non-standard GPS entries are removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF is metadata embedded in photos by cameras and phones, including GPS location, camera model and capture settings.
Does removing EXIF affect image quality?
No. Only the metadata is removed; the pixel data is unchanged.
Will stripping EXIF affect image quality?
No. EXIF data is stored in separate metadata segments. Removing it does not affect image pixels or visual quality.
Can I see what data was removed before stripping?
Yes. The tool shows a count of metadata fields found before and after stripping, confirming exactly what was removed.
Does this tool work for RAW camera files?
No. The tool supports JPEG only. RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, etc.) have different metadata structures and are not supported.
Is the GPS location completely unrecoverable after stripping?
Yes. The GPS data is removed from the file binary. Standard metadata recovery tools cannot retrieve data removed this way, as the bytes are overwritten.
