About VAT Calculator

The VAT Calculator makes it easy to work with both tax-exclusive (net) and tax-inclusive (gross) prices. Add VAT to a net price to get the total the customer pays, or strip VAT from a gross price to find the net amount and the tax portion separately.

Quick-select buttons for common VAT rates (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 21%, and 25%) let you calculate in one click, or you can enter any custom percentage for countries or industries with non-standard rates. The results show net price, VAT amount, and gross price all at once.

All calculations run in your browser with no server communication. Whether you are a freelancer preparing invoices, a business owner reconciling accounts, or a shopper checking prices, the tool delivers instant and accurate results.

Examples

Add 20% VAT to a net price

Calculate the gross price a customer pays including 20% VAT.

Input

Net price: 100, VAT rate: 20%

Output

VAT amount: 20 | Gross price: 120

Remove VAT from a gross price

Extract the net price and VAT amount from a tax-inclusive receipt total.

Input

Gross price: 120, VAT rate: 20%

Output

Net price: 100 | VAT amount: 20

Common Use Cases

  • Preparing invoices that show both net and gross prices
  • Reconciling VAT-inclusive receipts for expense claims
  • Checking whether a quoted price already includes tax
  • Calculating the amount of VAT owed on a product sold
  • Comparing prices across countries with different VAT rates
  • Setting retail prices that include the correct VAT amount

Troubleshooting

Adding VAT to a price that already includes VAT

Solution

Use "Remove VAT" mode first to extract the net price, then use "Add VAT" if you need to reapply a different rate. Double-applying VAT gives an incorrect higher total.

Entering the VAT as a decimal fraction instead of a percentage

Solution

Enter the VAT rate as a whole number percentage (e.g., enter 20 for 20%, not 0.20). The calculator expects the rate in percentage form.

Confusing VAT with sales tax calculation methods

Solution

VAT is added on top of the net price. Sales tax in the US works identically mathematically (rate x base = tax), so this calculator also works for sales tax calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VAT?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied to goods and services at each stage of production and sale. Businesses collect it on behalf of the government and remit the net amount after deducting VAT they paid on their own purchases.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Use "Remove VAT" mode. Enter the gross (tax-inclusive) price and the VAT rate. The calculator divides the gross price by (1 + rate/100) to find the net, and subtracts to find the VAT amount.

What is the difference between adding and removing VAT?

Adding VAT: Net x (1 + rate/100) = Gross. Removing VAT: Gross / (1 + rate/100) = Net. Removing VAT from 120 at 20% gives 100 net, not 96 (which would be wrong if you subtracted 20% of 120).

Can I use this for GST or sales tax?

Yes. GST and sales tax work the same way mathematically as VAT — a percentage applied to the base price. Just enter your local rate and choose add or remove mode.

Is this calculator currency-neutral?

Yes. Enter your amount in any currency (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.) and the calculator works correctly. Currency symbols are not required.

Can I enter a custom VAT rate?

Yes. If your rate is not one of the quick-select buttons, simply type any custom percentage into the rate field. Rates like 7%, 8.5%, or 19% are all valid.

Why does removing 20% VAT from 120 give 100 instead of 96?

Because the 20 in the gross price represents 20% of the net (100), not 20% of the gross (120). The correct reverse formula is Net = Gross / 1.20, giving exactly 100.

Is my data private?

Yes. All calculations run entirely in your browser. No prices or rates are transmitted to any server.
